The Lope de Vega Theater will once again be offering an exciting series of jazz concerts for its 2016 – 2017 season. The jazz series will feature a variety of jazz artists and bands from Grammy award winners such as the Yellowjackets, to local bands such as O Sister!, and record breaking recording artists such as Ron Carter.
October 25th at 8:30pm – Yellowjackets
Yellowjackets is a Grammy award winning jazz fusion band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1977 as the Robben Ford Band, the Yellowjackets current line-up consists of pianist Russell Ferrante, drummer and percussionist William Kennedy, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, and bassist Dane Alderson.
November 2nd at 8:30am – Lizz Wright
Lizz Wright is an American jazz and R&B singer from Georgia. Born in the small town of Hahira, Wright was introduced to singing at an early age in her church, where her father was both the minister and music director. At home, she was exposed to various types of secular music, especially genres in which she would achieve acclaim such as jazz and soul. Wright will also be performing in Barcelona on November 1st at L’Auditori de Barcelona and on November 3rd in Cartagena at the Nuevo Teatro Cinco.
December 8th at 8:30am – O Sister!
O Sister! is a Spanish jazz, swing, dixie, and 1930s style band from the Andalusian capital of Seville. The band was formed with the intent of both renewing interest in and paying homage to American music from the 1930s, dixie (i.e. traditional jazz) and swing. Making up the vocalist half of the band are singers Paula Padilla, Helena Amado, and Marcos Padilla. The instrumental half of O Sister! is comprised of guitarist Matías Comino, bassist Camilo Bosso, and drummer Pablo Cabra.
February 8th at 8:30am – Didier Lockwood
Didier Lockwood is a jazz violinist from France. Born in Calais, Lockwood began studying the violin when he was six years old. Considered by many to be a successor to accomplished French violinists such as Stephane Grappelli, Lockwood ceased his formal training in 1972 and joined up with progressive rock/jazz fusion band Magma. He would release his first album as leader, New World, seven years later and has gone on to record over twenty albums since then.
March 6th at 8:30am – Ron Carter & Richard Galliano Duo
Ron Carter & Richard Galliano are each accomplished jazz artists who often come together to perform as a duo. Ron Carter is an American jazz bassist from Ferndale, Michigan. Having appeared on over 2,221 recording sessions, he is the most-recorded jazz bassist in history. Richard Galliano is a French accordionist of Italian descent born in Cannes. Galliano began learning the piano and accordion from his father, Lucien Galliano, at the age of four. Galliano has recorded over 50 albums under his own name and has worked with a variety of accomplished jazz artists.

March 20th at 8:30am – Joe Lovano Classic Quartet
Joe Lovano is an American jazz saxophonist from Cleveland, Ohio. Born in 1952 to a musical family who surrounded him with jazz music from an early age, he began to learn the saxophone from his father Tony “Big T” Lovano, who was himself a jazz saxophonist. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Lovano has recorded 47 albums and earned a Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Large Jazz Ensemble.
April 3rd at 8:30am – Antonio Sanchez & Migration
Antonio Sanchez is a Mexican jazz drummer and four time Grammy award winner. Accompanying him are saxophonist Seamus Blake, pianist John Escreet, bassist Matt Brewer, and vocalist Thana Alexa. Born in Mexico City in 1971, Sanchez started playing the drums when he was only five years old. After first playing professionally in his teens, he would later enroll at the National Conservatory in Mexico with a degree in classical piano before enrolling in the Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory. Sanchez’s popularity increased significantly in 2014 following his composition of the original music for the film Birdman by Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
April 24th at 8:30am – Jon Cleary
Jon Cleary is a Grammy award winning funk and R&B pianist based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Originally from the rural British village of Cranbrook in Kent, England, Cleary attributes his love of New Orleans music to his upbringing in a musical family. From maternal grandparents who were musical performers to a father who was a 50’s skiffle man, Cleary was able to begin his education in the music he would go on to study for over twenty years. Upon completing school in 1980, he made his way to New Orleans where has dedicated himself to the city’s music scene for over three decades.
May 16th at 8:30am – Kurt Rosenwinkel
Kurt Rosenwinkel is an American jazz guitarist and keyboardist who achieved prominence in the 1990s. Born in 1970 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he attended the Berklee College of Music for two years before dropping out in 1990 to go on tour with jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton. With the help of Burton, Rosenwinkel moved to New York where he was able to kick start a career that would help him become one of the most respected jazz guitarists of his time.
June 5th at 8:30am – Dhafer Youssef
Dhafer Youssef is a singer, composer, and Oud player from Tunisia. Born in 1967 in Teboulba, Youssef nurtured an interest in jazz at an early age, secretly listening to jazz music during his studies at a Quranic school as a child. Coming from a long line of muezzins, people who are responsible for leading the call to prayer at a mosque, Youssef discovered the potential of his voice while practicing Quran recitals with his grandfather. In the hopes of pursuing his musical passion, Youssef moved to Europe where he is currently based. Reflecting the diversity of his musical influences, allmusic.com notes that his “music combines Sufi tradition, world, mystical, and jazz influences with Arabic lyricism”.
